Johann Christian Wernsdorf (1723-1793) taught rhetoric and poetry at the University of Helmstadt between 1752 and his death

The survey for this map was made on the outward voyage of Lord Macartney's embassy to China and shows the entrance to Turon Harbour – Da Nang in modern Vietnam – and the course of the brig HMS Jackall

to which he was strongly inclined by the bent of his genius

"elegantly engraved by the most eminent artists" was published posthumously
